    Challenge

    To advance its mission of ending gun violence, Everytown for Gun Safety needed access to timely, reliable data. But government data sources were often outdated, incomplete, or expensive. Recognizing that critical information was available in news and social media, the team looked to AI to help capture timely data and connect the dots.

    Solution

    Everytown developed a real-time dashboard that uses AI to extract and refine  information about gun violence from media sources, such as news articles, social media posts, press releases, and videos. In tandem, the team launched Optic Rebound, a chatbot trained on Everytown’s curated knowledge base, to provide fast, evidence-based answers to questions about gun violence prevention.

  • Lumina Foundation

    Challenge

    Lumina Foundation worked with Hattaway Communications to develop a research-based narrative about the value of higher education for individuals and society. They produced a message manual with insights from audience research, tips for crafting stories, and tools to tailor messages. To get the most of its investment, Lumina wanted to equip communicators, program officers, and other team members to draw on data and tested language to drive the new narrative in all of their communications and outreach. 

    Solution

    Hattaway built a custom AI tool—the Lumina Message Maker—that puts Lumina’s research and resources at the fingertips of any team member. Guided by instructions and examples, the Message Maker allows users to quickly generate strategic messaging, assess existing content, and generate story ideas that bring the narrative to life.

    Outcome

    The Lumina team is working with the Message Maker to draft and refine all kinds of content, from tailored talking points for policymakers to social media posts from program officers. The GPT has transformed message research and resources into a flexible, user-friendly tool that encourages and equips the team to think about driving narrative change in everything they produce.

  • California Health Care Foundation (CHCF)

    Challenge

    CHCF’s communications team saw growing internal interest in using generative AI, and sought a secure, practical way to explore AI’s potential for improving their efficiency and productivity, while enhancing the quality of their content.

    AI Solution

    CHCF partnered with digital agency Whole Whale to create a secure, custom AI platform trained on the foundation’s brand voice, mission, and website content. Designed to support everyday communications tasks, the platform offers pre-set prompts to help staff with a range of tasks, from summarizing reports, enhancing search engine optimization (SEO), crafting accessible and inclusive content, and generating creative ideas. 

    Outcome

    The platform has become a trusted tool for producing all kinds of content that reflects the organization’s brand and communications strategy—from turning dense reports into user-friendly summaries, to crafting website and newsletter content with a consistent voice, to refining messages for clarity and impact. Regular learning sessions help staff compare notes and build their skills together. Human oversight in the work flow ensures outputs are accurate, strategic, and aligned with the CHCF mission.

  • American Policy Ventures

    Challenge

    American Policy Ventures, a nonprofit that supports bipartisan policymaking in Washington, aimed to proactively promote innovative ideas on a range of issues. With a one-man communications shop, the organization needed to boost its capacity to develop and execute digital campaigns.

    Solution

    Using ChatGPT, APV’s digital communications director built a custom tool for designing campaign plans and creating strategic content—from crafting detailed content calendars to tailoring posts for different social platforms to drafting press releases, media pitches, opeds, and other earned media materials. 

    He provided detailed instructions for campaign planning, with target audiences, objectives, and insights for tailoring messages for different stakeholders. Custom istructions also guided the creation of content and outreach activities reflecting APV’s policy data, brand voice, and legal guidelines.

    To ensure quality outputs, he provided examples of successful campaign plans, along with case studies to build new plans based on what worked. He included Key Performance Indicators to assess the effectiveness of campaigns, including metrics for media coverage, legislative outreach, public engagement, and fundraising.

    Outcome

    ChatGPT is mapping out internal goals and deadlines, producing content outlines, and generating Deep Research prompts, which helps the communications team focus their time on writing high-quality content and connecting with surrogates to get it published. The team estimated that AI would help increase the amount of content published by at least 20%.

    Challenge

    As one of the world’s most-used sources of information, Wikipedia fuels many AI models—but often without attribution. At the same time, the Wikimedia Foundation aimed to scale creative storytelling across social platforms to expand the reach of Wikipedia’s information, without compromising human oversight or editorial standards.

    Solution

    Wikimedia Foundation uses AI to accelerate its storytelling process, without replacing people on its content team. The team uses ChatGPT to brainstorm campaign ideas featuring Wikipedia content, works with Midjourney to generate visuals that match Wikimedia’s brand, and built custom tools to translate Wikipedia articles into TikTok-style videos—all while keeping humans in the loop.

    Outcome

    AI is helping the Wikimedia Foundation test ideas faster, increase output, and engage a new generation of users—without losing the human touch that defines its work. The foundation is producing more campaigns and more content in more languages, expanding its reach to new audiences worldwide.
